Yea, both ing and virtualbank offer nice bonuses and I normally recommend both of them to people who want to try online banking out. Great way to get your feet wet and see how they work while getting some money. Oh and if anyone needs a referral to either, simply shoot me an email. However, I tend to look more at just the actual features when deciding which account I will use as my primary one.

One other I would add is bonuses offered. Even though ING doesn't offer the best interest rates anymore, it still makes sense to open an account for the $25 bonus.

A long time ago, last year I believe, you could add accounts to ing online. Now I think with both ing and emigrantdirect you can only add additional accounts by sending them a voided check. The account you use to fund it initially only requires the information, such as routing number and account number. This is the only way around sending in a check rule that I know of now.

@Kevin Morris:
ING Direct allows up to 3 linked external accounts. I set one up through the site when I initially opened the account, but looking at it now they only list options for linking other accounts by snail mailing a check; there must be some way around that but I don't know what it is.
They also have options for automated monthly transfers.

Two things that are important to me when opening an account, are can I link to more than 1 checking account, and can I set up automated transactions like automatically taking X amount from my checking account on the 1st of every month.

I recently opened an Amboy Direct Premium Savings account, because it offered the highest rate at the moment, and realized that I can do neither one. If Emigrant-Direct can do one or both, I may switch to them.
