About me
Well, where to start. I am a college student in my earlier 20s, with about a year left and little clue on where I am headed after that. I am not majoring in finance but it is my current hobby that I am spending more and more time on. In the past I have worked several ‘a little above minimum wage’ type jobs, mostly low skill. While growing up I was not frugal at all but after I got my first job that changed a little. I was very good at saving my money and not splurging on smaller things but somewhat weaker when it came to larger purchases.
Not really caring about the details of my finances, my savings slowly diminished. I guess it didn’t help that I took some time off from working to “concentrate on school.” I began to notice that I needed to make changes when I got to the point that I had to take out a cash advance to pay a bill. After that I began to work more, especially in the summer. Living with a relative, working, and receiving financial aid helped me establish some decent finances, for a college student anyway. I began to get much more interested in putting my money to use. First it started with signing up for promotions for savings accounts and slowly evolved into a desire to invest in the stock market.
Talking about the details of personal finances has always seemed like a taboo so I became very intrigued when I discovered personal finance blogs. It gave me a feeling and insight that you just don’t get when you read finance pieces written for the general public. I have to say,for example, reading a chronicle of opening or managing a roth ira was much more persuasive in getting me to open one up than some boring article by a major majazine telling the benefits of saving for retirement. This personal touch is what made it more enticing.
Soooo I decided to join the ranks of the personal finance blog world. I hope to at the very least to improve my finances by setting goals and keeping myself more accountable. I’ll share with you my what I’m doing to improve my finances and of course when I do stupid things. Hopefully not much of the latter.
